Product: Metiom Formula: Each 40mg Metiom® capsule contains: Description: Esomeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion and is structurally related to omeprazole but more potent than this. Indications for use: Esophagitis for gastroesophageal reflux. It is an adjunct in the treatment of gastric infection by H. pylori. Dosage: The capsules should be administered one hour before meals. They should be swallowed and for any reason should be crushed, chewed or powdered. Adverse Effects: Generally it us well tolerated and most frequent reactions could be headache, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, constipation and abdominal pain. Cautions: Must be used with caution in patients with impaired liver function. Before starting any treatment with esomeprazole gastric carcinoma possibility must be discarded, because this drug could mask symptoms and delay diagnosis. Drug Interactions: Due to the metabolism of esomeprazole by cytochrome P450 plasma levels of drugs such as diazepam, citalopram, imipramine, phenytoin may be increased, which are metabolized by this system. The pH increase caused by esomeprazole may reduce the absorption of drugs such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, iron salts, digoxin, etc. Esomeprazole increases prothrombin time, so that in patients treated with oral anticoagulants such as warfarin is necessary to monitor the prothrombin time to prevent abnormal bleeding.
